The partnership between Tsinghua ACCEPT and Vale was launched in April 2019. Over the past four years, ACCEPT has successfully carried out research efforts that included publication of its biannual series of China Macroeconomic Analysis and Forecast Reports and a host of academic projects in the field of Government and Economics, in addition to arranging events and international academic exchanges such as its Annual Conference of Government and Economics. ACCEPT and Vale have also joined hands with the Brazil-China Business Council (CEBC) and the Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI) to organize the China-Brazil Economic Development Strategic Dialogue for four consecutive years, which has contributed to deepening mutual understanding between China and Brazil in terms of their national economic development strategies and the strengthening of bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

At a signing ceremony held on campus, Tsinghua University’s Vice President Wang Hongwei stated that Vale had already become an integral partner in championing the university’s development over the past four years, including providing robust support towards the fostering of its academic research and think tank community. Through the combined efforts of both sides, ACCEPT has already garnered far-reaching influence in academic, policy and international domains, having come to the fore as a preeminent research institute at Tsinghua University. The China-Brazil Economic Development Strategic Dialogue has moreover come to represent a crucial outcome of this co-operative undertaking, which has not only provided both countries with thought leadership and practical approaches for advancing their economic development, but has also contributed to deeper ties with Brazil in a variety of areas, establishing a solid foundation for pursuing bilateral cooperation on friendly terms. In a world today where globalization has gone into reversal and the international political and economic landscape is undergoing constant changes, Wang expressed his hope that by supporting further progress in scholarly research, Vale would establish a bridge in partnership with Tsinghua University to continue supporting friendly cooperative relations between the two countries, offering up additional positive momentum in looking forward to future developments.

The Executive Vice-President of Corporate & External Affairs at Vale, Alexandre Silva D’Ambrosio, pointed out that 2023 marked the 45th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up, as well as the 50th anniversary of Vale’s first iron ore shipment to the country. He conveyed that his company is proud of having witnessed the entire process of China’s reform and opening-up as both a beneficiary and a contributor, and is encouraged to see that the country remains committed to opening up wider to the world, which Vale believes will provide even greater mutual opportunities in the future. D’Ambrosio reaffirmed that Vale is intent on pursuing and very much looks forward to a continued partnership and shared prosperity with China on its path to modernization.

Tsinghua ACCEPT’s Director David Daokui Li remarked that Vale represents a core enterprise for the largest country in South America and has played an indispensable role in bilateral economic development and cooperative exchanges between China and Brazil. By adopting a global vision with an aim to advancing international academic research, Tsinghua ACCEPT and Vale have continued to promote the coordinated development of foundational theoretical research in the disciplines of economics and social science, while spurring on the formation of the emerging field of Government and Economics.

The newly inked agreement also received endorsements from Ouyang Qin, Secretary of the Party Committee for Tsinghua University’s School of Social Sciences; Fu Xuan, Director of Development at the Tsinghua University Education Foundation; Li Ke’aobo, Executive Deputy Director of Tsinghua ACCEPT; Luiz Ricardo de Medeiros Santiago, Director of Global Institutional and Government Relations at Vale; Tracy (Xue) Xie, President of Vale China; Vivian (Wei) Feng, General Manager of Corporate Affairs at Vale China; among other leaders and administrators in attendance at the signing ceremony.
