On October 25, 2023, SAGE hosted an online lecture entitled “Local Chinese government debt: Analyzing its dimensions, causes and impacts.” This lecture was presented by David Daokui Li, Director of Tsinghua University’s Academic Center for Chinese Economic Practice and Thinking (ACCEPT) and Co-President of the Society for the Analysis of Government and Economics (SAGE). The webinarrepresented the eighth installment in SAGE’s Lectures in Government and Economics Series.

On June 17, 2023, the 45th Tsinghua University Forum on China and the World Economy was held inside the Weilun Building’s main lecture hall on campus at Tsinghua University’s School of Economics and Management. The biannual event was hosted by Tsinghua University’s Academic Center for Chinese Economic Practice and Thinking (ACCEPT) under the theme of “2023 Mid-Year Economic Outlook.”

Over the past several centuries, the size of governments around the world have undergone a dramatic expansion during the process of economic development, with the average share of government spending as a proportion of GDP having risen from around 10% to as much as 39% on average. This pattern of development is often referred to as Wagner’s Law. This lecture aims to explain the root causes of Wagner's Law and predict future changes in the size of governments.
