Inaugural Government and Economics Training Workshop Successfully Held at Tsinghua University

From July 8 to 10, 2024, the 1st Training Workshop on Government and Economics was successfully held at Tsinghua University. The inaugural workshop was co-hosted by Tsinghua University’s Academic Center for Chinese Economic Practice and Thinking (ACCEPT) and School of Social Sciences in partnership with the Society for Government and Economics (SAGE), and was co-organized with the Research Institute for Government and Economics at Zhejiang University’s Research Center for Regional Coordinated Development and the Central University of Finance and Economics’ Research Center for Government and Economics, together with the academic journals Reform, Review of Investment Studies and Journal of Government and Economics.



As a new fast-growing field of study within the discipline of economics, government and economicsmainly focuses on studying the role of the government as the most important participant involved in the functioning of a modern market economy, in addition to its behaviors and underlying incentive mechanisms. The sub-discipline is dedicated to presenting the world with a new body of knowledge based on China's own unique economic practice, advancing our understanding of the government’s role in a market economy, and contributing new theoretical learning directed at economic reform and high-quality development.


The 1st Training Workshop on Government and Economics has received wide-ranging attention from the academic community as well as various sectors of society. Gao Peiyong, member and former vice president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Huang Qunhui, director of the Institute of Economics at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Sheng Bin, vice president of Nankai University; Yang Ruilong, national first-class professor at Renmin University of China and dean of Chongshi College; Ouyang Qin, chairman of the school council at Tsinghua University’s School of Social Sciences; and David Daokui Li, director of Tsinghua ACCEPT, attended the opening ceremony and delivered keynote speeches to inaugurate the training workshop.


During the three-day programme, a series of lectures were delivered respectively by Stephen Broadberry, professor at the University of Oxford; Ma Haitao, president of the Central University of Finance and Economics; Liu Shouying, dean of Renmin University of China’s School of Economics; Feng Ming, director of the Macroeconomic Policy and Evaluation Research Office at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences’ Institute of Quantitative and Technological Economics; Ma Guangrong, deputy dean of the Renmin University of China’s School of Finance; Fu Lin, deputy dean of the Central University of Finance and Economics’ School of Economics; Xu Xiang, professor at the Central University of Finance and Economics’ School of Economics; Jin Xingye, associate professor at the Central University of Finance and Economics’ School of Economics; Liu Peilin, chief researcher at Tsinghua ACCEPT; and Xu Zhihao, assistant professor at Tsinghua University’s School of Social Sciences.


Around 70 scholars and students from top universities in China and overseas were selected and nominated to participate in the three-day training workshop, including from Tsinghua University, Peking University, Central University of Finance and Economics, China University of Political Science and Law, China Agricultural University, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Beijing Normal University, Nanjing University, University of International Business and Economics, Capital University of Economics and Business, Guangxi University of Finance and Economics, Tibet University, and Macau University of Science and Technology, among others.
