Tsinghua ACCEPT delegation visits Brazil on tour of Latin America

From December 16-20, a delegation from Tsinghua University’s Academic Center for Chinese Economic Practice and Thinking (ACCEPT) toured Brazil and carried out a series of important visits and exchanges. The purpose of this trip was to strengthen cooperation between China and Brazil in academics, policy, economics and trade, among other domains, while promoting common development among the two sides.

Li Ke’aobo, Executive Deputy Director of Tsinghua ACCEPT, met with Her Excellency Mme. Tian Min, Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The two sides conducted a comprehensive dialogue on China's economic situation, China-Brazil economic and trade cooperation, the development of Chinese-invested enterprises in Brazil, the exchange and training of talents in higher education, and topics associated with the next G20 Summit in 2024, which will be hosted by Brazil in Rio de Janeiro, as well as a pragmatic discussion of the opportunities for continued cooperation between China and Brazil in a variety of areas.


The Tsinghua ACCEPT delegation visited the Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI), a leading think tank in Brazil. Tsinghua ACCEPT Executive Deputy Director Li Ke’aobo engaged in a closed-door meeting with His Excellency Mr. Marcos Caramuru, former Ambassador of Brazil to the People’s Republic of China, and Ms. Cecilia Machadon, Chief Economist of the Banco BOCOM of Brazil, carrying out an in-depth consultation on further promoting China-Brazil exchanges in the area of policy and cooperation between think tanks from G20 member states. Huang Zhangkai, Tsinghua ACCEPT Researcher and Professor at Tsinghua University’s School of Economics and Management, held a podcast discussion together with Mr. Ambassador Caramuru to offer up analysis on the current economic situation in China and engage in a lively discussion on the bright prospects for China's continued economic development as well as the significant potential for China-Brazil economic and trade cooperation.

Moreover, the team of researchers and academicians from Tsinghua ACCEPT also visited the headquarters of Vale S.A., the world's largest producer of iron ore and nickel, where the delegation met with the company's Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Eduardo Bartolomeo, and held an informal discussion with its board of directors on China's economic development trends. Tsinghua ACCEPT Director and Professor David Daokui Li joined the head-to-head talks online. The two sides conducted an extensive exchange of views on China's economy, the ongoing energy transition, and scientific and technological innovation, in addition to other topics of immediate concern, while reaching a common understanding to continue pursuing strengthened cooperation between Tsinghua University and Vale S.A.


Tsinghua ACCEPT’s successful trip to Brazil has injected a renewed impetus into the cooperative relationship between China and Brazil in the fields of academics, policy, economics and trade, among other domains. In 2024, China and Brazil will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the formal establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations, providing grounds for forward-looking optimism in the two countries’ quest for more opportunities to engage in cooperation and common development amidst a new and changing international landscape.
