CCWE Met with US Media Delegation

On November 8, 2011, Tsinghua University Center for China in the World Economy (CCWE) hosted a delegation of media members from the United States. As part of a trip arranged by the China U.S. Exchange Foundation, three American journalists met with CCWE Director David Daokui Li and several Tsinghua SEM undergraduate and Ph.D. students for a candid and free-wheeling conversation. The reporters included Jonathan Alter, Columnist, Bloomberg; David Sweeney, Managing Editor, News, National Public Radio; and Daniel Gross, Economics Editor/Columnist, Yahoo! Finance.

With the goal of enhancing mutual understanding of both nations, the session featured a discussion of a wide variety of crucial issues. In addition to discussing the challenges and future prospects for the U.S. and Chinese economies, both sides made obvious efforts to understand each other’s perspectives. The American representatives were extremely interested in learning about what perceptions Chinese students have of the United States and were also anxious to learn about the goals of the students and to understand the educational culture and system in China. Similarly, Tsinghua students were eager to learn about Americans’perceptions of China, how the media in the U.S. covers the economy, and about the American political system, particularly the upcoming presidential elections.
