At the Fifth Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee, the Party Central Committee made the judgment that at present, and for a time into the future, China's development is in an important period of strategic opportunity. However, this period comes with both new opportunities and new challenges. What are the connotations of this strategic period, including the opportunities, risks, and resolutions? To address these questions, Tsinghua University’s Institute of China’s National Governance and Global Governance and the Academic Center for Chinese Economic Practice and Thinking (ACCEPT) held a Regular Review and Consultation on Economic Development by National High-end Think Tanks on December 19, 2020.

The theme of the symposium was “The Period of Strategic Opportunity and the New Journey Toward Building a Comprehensively Modern Socialist Country.” Participants included Feng Zhongping, Vice President of the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR); Gao Zugui, Vice President of the Institute for International Strategic Studies of the Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China; Li Ling, Professor at the National School of Development of Peking University; Liu Qing, Deputy Dean of the National Academy of Development and Strategy at Renmin University of China; Qu Weixi, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation at the Ministry of Commerce; Wang Yi, Vice President of the Institutes of Science and Development at the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Xing Guangcheng, Director of the Institute of Chinese Borderland Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences;  Xu Jian, President of China Foreign Affairs University; and Zhang Xiaojing, Director of the National Institution for Finance and Development at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Strategic experts from the National Defense University and other high-end think tank scholars also participated in the topic discussion. Li Ke’aobo, Vice Director of ACCEPT, moderated the symposium.

In his concluding remarks, Professor David Daokui Li, Director of ACCEPT, expressed his gratitude to the guests from participating think tanks for their excellent speeches. Looking ahead to future prospects for China's period of strategic opportunity, Dr. Li noted that we can see the international situation is complex, it is important to focus on our own affairs, there are many tools available, and the future is promising.
